The Emerald Circle – A Dark Orbit Clan

Welcome to the official blog of The Emerald Circle, a Dark Orbit Clan.  The Emerald Circle – tag [TEC] – is one of the top-10 ranked clans on the USA West server, and a proud member of VRU (Venus) Company.  [TEC] has written an extensive series of guides to Dark Orbit for our newbie members that we call our 101 series.  Each contains information contributed by the most experienced Dark Orbit players to aid you, the new player, in quickly getting up to speed and enhancing your enjoyment of the game.  We post this here on our blog not only for the benefit of our own clan’s members, but all Dark Orbit players, especially those new to the game.  Feel free to comment and let us know what you think, and, of course, add your own wisdom!  Thanks for visiting!

“It’s time for you to stop putting up with guff from others and fight back with the brand-new Insta-Repair which allows you to strike back quickly with a vengeance. Those who cause you damage better beware, because with the Insta-Repair you’ve got an ace up your sleeve!  You can activate it at your home base. Within a second, you’ll be able to repair your ship back to its maximum number of hit points! The Insta-Repair costs 10 repair credits”

(Frankly, I’d rather wait the two or three minutes of time spent repairing then use a precious repair credit! Good time to refill the drink, after all!)

Dark Orbit 101: Advanced Boosters

by Scsidog

Boosters

When hunting enemy ships, consider using only the following boosters: Shield Booster (25%), Hitpoint Booster (10%), and Damage Booster (10%). There is one interesting side effect to note when using boosters: the stronger your initial position, the more value the booster gives you. Here are the effects using damage boosters:

1x ammo (no promerium) with booster = 1.10x
1x ammo (with promerium) = 1.30x
1x ammo (promerium) with booster = 1.43x
2x ammo (no promerium) with booster = 2.20x
2x ammo (with promerium) = 2.60x
2x ammo (promerium) with booster = 2.86x
3x ammo (no promerium) with booster = 3.30x
3x ammo (with promerium) = 3.90x
3x ammo (promerium) with booster = 4.29x
4x ammo (no promerium) with booster = 4.40x
4x ammo (with promerium) = 5.20x
4x ammo (promerium) with booster = 5.72x

So the booster value for an FE Goli (4.8k Damage 1x) ranges from 0.48k additional damage to 2.5k additional damage.

It is interesting to note that 3x ammo with promerium is almost the same as 4x ammo without promerium! Further, 3x ammo with promerium AND boosters can be almost 30% better than 4x ammo without promerium or boosters. If the fight between relative equals using the same ammo with one being a promerium user and the other being a booster user, it is clear that promerium wins by a lot!

Like ammo, adding boosters to rockets gives the best results for the best rockets. Here are the damage booster effects for rockets:

1k Rocket (no promerium) with booster = 1.10k
1k Rocket (promerium) = 1.30k
1k Rocket (promerium) with booster = 1.43k
2k Rocket (no promerium) with booster = 2.20k
2k Rocket (promerium) = 2.60k
2k Rocket (promerium) with booster = 2.86k
4k Rocket (no promerium) with booster = 4.40k
4k Rocket (promerium) = 5.20k
4k Rocket (promerium) with booster = 5.72k

Thus, the value of the booster ranges from 0.10k additional damage to 0.52k additional damage.

If a FE Goli Premium Player with the auto-rocket chip (PAFE from now on) attacks with 3x ammo and 4k rockets, he/she will generate 22.5k damage per second.

Shield Boosters
Unlike the damage booster, the shield booster gives a stronger effect than using promerium (20%). To get 60 minutes of promerium based shield enhancement takes 60 promerium which costs 6 xeno at 10 Uri per xeno = 60 Uri equivalent per hour. So 1 days additional protection costs 24 (hours per day) x 60 (uri per hour) = 1,440 uri verus 10k uri for the booster. Here are the shield booster effects for an FE Goli in speed mode using 190k shield points as a standard:

Standard with promerium = 228 shield points
Standard with booster = 285 shield points
Standard with both = 342 shield points

Using both promerium and shield boosters almost doubles (1.8x) the shield value, making it possible to take on both an FE Goli and an FE Venge or an FE Goli and a near FE Goli or 3 weak Golis. This is a very powerful effect and I believe worth the high cost.

Hitpoint Boosters
A hitpoint booster increases the amount of hitpoints your ship can take by 10%. The hitpoint booster does NOT increase the amount of hitpoints damage you do!! The value of this booster increases with the hitpoints of your ship. Thus different ships get different value using the booster. Here are the booster effects for all ships:

Phoenix (4k)——-with booster = 4.4k
Yamato (8k)——–with booster = 8.8k
Defcom (12k)——-with booster = 13.2k
Liberator (16k)——with booster = 17.6k
Piranha (32k)——–with booster = 35.2k
Leonov (64k)——–with booster = 70.4k
Nostromo (64k)—–with booster = 70.4k
Big Boy (128k)——with booster = 140.8k
Vengeance (180k)–with booster = 198.0k
Goliath (256k)——-with booster = 281.6k

The value of the booster for each ship type is given below:

Phoenix —– = 0.4k
Yamato —– = 0.8k
Defcom—— = 1.2k
Liberator—– = 1.6k
Piranha—— = 3.2k
Leonov——- = 6.4k
Nostromo—– = 6.4k
Big Boy——- = 12.8k
Vengeance—- = 18.0k
Goliath——- = 25.6k

So if attacked by a PAFE Goliath this means

Goliath =1.10 additional seconds of life
Vengeance =0.80 of additional seconds life
Big Boy =0.56 seconds of additional life
Nostromo =0.29 seconds of additional life
Leonov =0.29 seconds of additional life
Piranha =0.15 seconds of additional life
Liberator =0.07 seconds of additional life
Defcom =0.05 seconds of additional life
Yamato =0.04 seconds of additional life
Phoenix =002 seconds of additional life

It is clear that ships below the Vengeance have almost no net benefit and should never buy this booster.

GAME NEWS

  • A new server has been opened up, everyone starts at zero, which is very cool!. The new server is Global America 2.
  • A new galaxy gate has been added to Dark Orbit, called the Delta Gate.  So far, I don’t have any details on it, but I suspect it is four times as tough as the Alpha gate!

REGARDING TEC1/2
Esmerala has gone game inactive, so TEC1/2 is now leaderless.  Because it is just too much work to expect anyone to lead or play a leadership role in two clans, the decision has been made to just let TEC1/2 fade away.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hey ya’ll, if you see BlackEye in the game, tell him to reapply to the clan.  I deleted him from the clan by mistake.  I was trying to delete BlackEagle for inactivity since he hasn’t played in over five weeks, their names look an awful lot alike in the clan page and BlackEye got removed from the clan by mistake.  Please if you see him, chat with him, let him know what happened and tell him to rejoin the clan – besides, he’s got bonus credits coming his way! Dark Orbit 101: Bidding Tips

by CatDaddy

Peeps, bidding is a art that you need to learn. Here are a few simple strategies I have learned about bidding, that have helped me lose less bids, and often win bids for a lot less credits.

1. Never bid on the weekends.  Sure you could luck out and win a bid from time to time, but in general, a lot more people play on the weekends, so prices go up …A LOT.

2. Bid early in the morning. I myself try to catch that 5.55 am bid. You would be suprised how cheaply you can get ammo, shields, ect., with an early morning bid.

3. Try to get to know who bids. Certain clans and players bid way high all the time..300…ASG….TT (and some TEC members!) and a few more are known to bid high, so pay attention to who is winning bids a lot. That usually means they got plenty of credits to blow.

4. DONT GO BROKE ON BIDDING!!! I can’t stress this enough. I myself rather save up my credits and wait and bid in the morning then leave myself busted.  Patience is a necessery ingredient of a genius … a fool and his credits will soon part!

5. Don’t be discuraged if you lose a bid. It’s not the end of the world. When I first started I remember losing 28 mil on an Iris, so been there done that!  GoingGrey lost FOUR bids over $20 million on a single iris some time ago!  Remember that LOSING BIDS IS PART OF THE GAME.  Don’t whine about it.  Learn from it. Check who won the bid so you know that guy bids high, and outbid him/her next time.

6. Ask around in VRU chat before you bid. You can some times get information about the person who currently holds the bid. Chances are you can look that persons name up and if he is in the top 100, he probably has a lot of credits so you might not want to bid against them.

7.  Try not to bid against other VRU.  I know sometimes that is hard, it’s not easy to know who is VRU or not.  That’s why I have TEC after my name – and you should too.  That lets people know I am VRU.  Also, by having TEC after my name, our pact members are less likely to bid against me.

8. Finally, if you see me or another FE TEC member, ask them if they can test bid for you. I would be happy to test bid to help out a non FE member, all you got to do is ask.

GOOD LUCK GOD SPEED!

CHANGING YOUR NAME?  Please send a message “to all” in the clan whenever you change your name!!  If you do not let us know your new name, you are at risk of NOT getting paid any quests or bonuses that week if I can’t figure out who you are!

REMINDER: DO NOT beg, ask, plead, or whine for credits!!  Clan payday is every Monday! (sometimes I pay out early on Sunday, when time permits). Read the rest of this entry »

***Getting on my soapbox…***
Apologies in advance if this comes across “mean” or “pissy” or whatever…

Wow… I don’t read my game messages for about 8 days due to having to bust my butt dealing with housing issues, I come back, and what do I see?  FIFTY-SEVEN, yes, 57, messages from 14 different members (yes, sent multiple messages)  begging for credits!  I lost my ship give me money.  I lost my iris give me money.  I don’t have time to make credits for an iris you give me money now.  etc. etc. etc.  You get the idea.  It took me just over 40 minutes to deal with those messages only!!

I’m not talking about the “legitimate” requests for credits, such as the level-up bonus, I’m talking about lazy, whining, just plain childish requests for credits.  Members who hardly play, who hardly pay any taxes.

I know we’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again:  DO NOT BEG THE CLAN FOR CREDITS.  NEVER. NEVER. NEVER.

If you need credits, go out and EARN them.  In other words, GO PLAY THE GAME.  If you don’t want to earn credits, then obviously, you don’t want to play the game!

***Getting OFF soapbox…***

Dark Orbit 101: Hunting

By ScsiDog

Aliens are fine and dandy to kill, can spend all day long just racking up the credits popping BKs.  But the real rush of Dark Orbit is hunting other players, especially, hunting down and destroying full elite goli’s.   Hunting real people is a very different beast from killing aliens.  Below are some guidelines, strategies, and tips to help you achieve success in hunting.

Before popping FE know the three rules:
1) Always have an escape route, unless you are in PVP
2) Prome/xeno are your pals
3) Run if you must, dont give the other guy the kill

Taxes – Election Time!

Taxes Just like in real life, it’s election time! Time to vote on a change in our tax structure.

Here are the options:

1. Keep the tax rate, bonuses, and clan quests the same.

2. Change the tax rate from 5% to 3%, no clan bonuses, clan quests to run two weeks at a time, payout every two weeks.

3. Change the tax rate from 5% to 1%, no clan bonuses, clan quests run for an entire month, payout once a month.

4. Change the tax rate to ZERO, no clan bonuses, no clan quests, no payouts, no taxes.

HOW TO VOTE: To vote, just send me (GoingGrey) a message using Clan Mail.  You may “debate” this issue here by posting a comment.

The Polls are open until 10pm Server time, Sunday, June 21st.

Should the Clan vote to change the tax structure, the new tax rate will take effect on July 4th, Independence Day.

Alien Kill Estimator

Have you ever wondered how much you would earn from killing, say, 250 Big Kris in Dark Orbit?  Well, now you can easily calculate how much you can earn from alien kills.  This basic Microsoft Excell spreadsheet is very simple, and wide-open for you to edit/change/tweak however you want to fit your own needs.  To use it as is, just type in the number of a particular alien in the green box, to get an instant total of experience, credits, and uri earned from those kills.  Download link: http://www.fileqube.com/file/PyAwnFViI192562 then click the link that says, “Download File.”  It’s free and clean - no viruses, no macros or any other nasty thing.  Screenshot:

Clan Quest: Quest Crusade Results

The latest Clan Quest ended Sunday, April 26th.

Well, it seems like the voting system for the Quest Crusade was more open to um…manipulation… than I would have thought possible.  There are people who got a vote who didn’t even log into the game at all this week, there are people who got a vote who I KNOW didn’t help anyone with any quests this week (like me – due to computer crash, I didn’t play hardly at all this week, much less help with a quest yet I got several votes!)… there was one person who obviously voted for themselves multiple times…two people who voted for eachother yet neither one gained any experience at all, but if they had helped eachother with quests, they both would have gained…

Dark Orbit 101: Ettiquette and Unspoken Rules

Etiquette… who’d have thought that manners would matter in a game, especially a game who’s primary purpose is to maim, kill, and destroy?  Well, I’m not talking about things like saying “please” and “thank you” (although those are helpful!)… I’m talking about game play manners. These are those unspoken “rules” that if you violate them, your gameplay enjoyment will be reduced.  You might even get shot at… or killed!

First and foremost, DO NOT sit in the middle of the portals. When you jump through, MOVE out of the dang gate already, will ya?! Sitting in the middle of the port is a good way to get yourself shot or even killed.  You see all those big bad Goli’s sitting around the gate, appearing to do nothing?  Well, they are guarding the port. So when an enemy ship jumps through, they can immediately target and begin to attack the bad guys.  If you are sitting in the port, you not only make it difficult for the portal guards to target incoming enemies, you very likely will be targeted by mistake!
